On Saturday, Dr. N. K. Arora, the co-chair of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 genomics consortium (Insacog), stated that there have been 300 sub-lineages of the Omicron variant detected in the last year. However, he assured that none of the variants could settle in the community, indicating high immunity.
He stated that the agency has tested out sewage and wastewater. The findings did not suggest any increase in the case number. He went on to say that since the pandemic began, they have sequenced the genomes of nearly three lakh samples. He pointed out that COVID cases are significantly low at present, yet the labs are conducting genome sequencing on 3,000 to 4,000 samples every month.
According to him, 60–65% of the COVID-positive samples being sequenced currently were found positive for XBB and its sub-lineages. He explained that after implementing the governmental norm for mandatory testing at international airports, the sources from the health ministry have found 124 COVID-positive people.
Additionally, the health ministry has revealed that 11 variants of SARS-CoV-2 were identified in "whole genome sequencing" (WGS) carried out on the samples of 40 passengers who were found positive. BA was another sub-variant discovered in WSG on positive samples from international passengers. 5.2, BF7.4.1, and CH.1.1, 1.1.1, among others.
